What to Expect
Mafra is often overlooked in most of the organized tour itineraries on the market. One of the reasons has to do with its relative isolation from other points of interest around Lisbon. This fault couldn't be more unfair. Runner up contender in the election for the "7 Wonders of Portugal", Mafra could have easily stood among the chosen monuments, for its sheer size and exceptional quality. Being one of the largest monastic constructions in Europe, Mafra clearly represents one of the highest points of the art and architecture in the country.
